30 MW pure hydrogen gas turbine put into operation in Inner Mongolia

      On December 28, a major breakthrough was achieved in China's independently developed 30-megawatt pure hydrogen gas turbine and hydrogen energy storage demonstration project—the "Jupiter-1" unit successfully generated electricity using pure hydrogen and maintained stable operation. This marks the transition of the 30-megawatt "power-hydrogen-power" demonstration project from blueprint to reality.

      Located in the Ordos Ejin Horo High-tech Industrial Development Zone of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, this project is a supporting initiative for the Shenneng Ejin Horo Banner Integrated Green Ammonia Production and Hydrogen Coupling Application Project. By integrating wind power, photovoltaic systems, and electrolysis-based hydrogen production, it establishes a "green electricity-to-green hydrogen, green hydrogen-to-renewable electricity" energy conversion model. This innovative approach effectively addresses the challenge of renewable energy surplus power utilization, providing a practical and scalable integrated solution for building a new energy system dominated by renewables. The project has been successfully selected as one of the first national-level hydrogen energy pilot projects in the energy sector.

      Experts from the China Energy Research Society stated that as a key energy equipment in the power system, the smooth transition of fuel from natural gas to pure hydrogen for gas turbines is regarded as an important technical path to build a zero-carbon power system. Wang Yongzhi, general manager of Mingyang Hydrogen Fuel, introduced that the successful realization of pure hydrogen power generation and stable operation of this unit has conducted full-chain engineering verification of the hydrogen energy storage system for pure hydrogen gas turbines.

      "Compared to conventional power plants of equivalent capacity, the 'Jupiter-1' pure hydrogen gas turbine can reduce carbon emissions by over 200,000 tons annually. With a combined cycle generating 48,000 kWh per hour, it can meet the daily electricity demand of 5,500 households," said Wang Yongzhi. He added that pure hydrogen gas turbine technology is poised to demonstrate broad application prospects in multiple scenarios, including grid peak shaving, distributed energy systems, comprehensive energy supply for industrial parks, and backup power for green data centers.
